Overview

This degree is designed for students wanting a science-based course that is focused towards career opportunities in the medical, paramedical and forensic fields. The areas of study include basic science (biology, chemistry and mathematics) followed by human physiology, genetics, nutrition, biochemistry and microbiology and the integration and applications of disciplines such as anatomy, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology and human physiology into biomedical science. Study is also available in bioethics and sociology of medicine.

Entry Requirements

Normal admission requirements apply. Assumed knowledge is any two units of Mathematics.

Recommended studies: Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Physics

For students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers Foundation units in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Career Opportunities

Major career options are contemporary areas of the biomedical industry such as positions in medical laboratories, hospitals and medical supply companies, as well as in research and development. The course provides an excellent scientific basis for entry into postgraduate awards such as medicine, business administration and law.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing may be granted on the basis of previous study completed at a recognised tertiary institution.

Other Benefits

Graduates of the BBiomedSc are eligible to enrol for a range of Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and course work Master programs.

Honours

There is no Honours year for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, however, well-qualified graduates may apply to complete the Bachelor of Science with Honours. BSc(Hons) graduates who achieve the appropriate level of Honours are eligible to apply to enrol for a research Master degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

These Course Rules & Plans are ONLY to be used if you Commenced, Transferred or Changed Versions in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science in 2010.

To qualify for the award a candidate shall pass a total of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points or the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.

Period of Candidature

The maximum period of candidature shall be 5 years as a full-time candidate or 10 years as a part-time candidate.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing will not be granted for units WORK300 and SCI395.
