Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT)

The Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) encompasses a range of government-endorsed national surveys used to assess the student journey from commencement, through to life as a graduate, including employment.

As an Australian university, UNE participates in the suite of QILT surveys listed below.

EQD works with various UNE areas, including governing bodies and the Schools to utilise the data from QILT surveys to inform educational quality assurance activities and improvement processes, such as School, Course and Unit Reviews and the recommendations that arise from them.

Student Experience Surveys are administered to most commencing and completing students to assess the quality of the student’s course experience.

The quality indicators assessed by this survey are:

  • Overall quality of the entire educational experience
  • Teaching quality
  • Learner engagement
  • Learning resources
  • Student support
  • Skills development

Students are also asked to indicate their likelihood to consider leaving higher education and their experience of freedom of expression at their institution.

Graduate Outcomes Surveys are administered to most graduates after completion to assess employment outcomes and overall course quality.

The quality indicators assessed by this survey are:

  • Proportion of graduates employed full time
  • Proportion of graduates in any kind of employment
  • Proportion of graduates who are undertaking further full-time study
  • Overall satisfaction with the course

Graduates are asked to indicate the utilisation of their skills or education in their current employment. Data related to further study is also collected.

The Graduate Outcomes Survey – Longitudinal is a 3-year follow up survey to the GOS, which assesses longer-term employment outcomes.

The quality indicators assessed by this survey are:

  • Proportion of graduates employed full time
  • Proportion of graduates in any kind of employment
  • Proportion of graduates who are undertaking further full-time study
  • Median salary of graduates in full-time employment

Employer Satisfaction Surveys are used to assess graduates’ job preparedness and foundational skills. Employers identified in the GOS are invited to participate in the survey.

The quality indicators assessed by this survey include employee satisfaction with graduates’:

  • Foundation skills
  • Adaptive skills
  • Collaborative skills
  • Technical skills
  • Employability skills

Unit and Teaching Evaluation Surveys

Both Unit and Teaching Evaluation Surveys are conducted at the end of each teaching period. Evaluations are conducted using a dedicated survey software called EvaSys. The surveys are an important mechanism of obtaining students opinion and feedback on the units we offer and provides a valuable insight for unit coordinators, lecturers/tutors and other school and faculty staff.

Students are sent an invitation to participate in the online surveys for each unit they are enrolled in via their UNE e-mail accounts and the e-mail contains a link to the online survey for that particular unit. Students can also access the survey via the 'My Feedback Surveys' page within MyLearn (MyLearn log-in required first).

Unit Evaluation Surveys

Unit Evaluations are mandatory and are conducted on all unit offerings encompassed in UNE’s Unit Monitoring Program.

The evaluation process is student-centric and students are invited to provide feedback on a unit using the following two sets of questions:

Quantitative

1.1 - I had access to sufficient learning material to meet the learning outcomes
1.2 - The unit was intellectually stimulating
1.3 - In the MyLearn environment for this unit, I was able to easily find what I was looking for
1.4 - Assessment tasks in this unit enabled me to demonstrate the unit learning outcomes
1.5 - I received constructive feedback on my assessment task(s)
1.6 - Overall, I was satisfied with this unit

Qualitative

1.7 - Which aspect(s) of this unit did you find most effective for your learning experience?
1.8 - Which aspect(s) of this unit could be improved to enhance the student learning experience?

Results of the evaluations are analysed and reported through unit monitoring each trimester.

Individual unit results, as well as other performance metrics, are available on the Unit Monitoring PowerBI dashboard (staff only) provided by Business Intelligence Services.

Teaching Evaluation Surveys

Teaching Evaluation Surveys invite students to provide feedback and evaluation of the quality of teaching they received during the delivery of a Unit. They are an optional set of questions which may be included in conjunction with the unit evaluation survey at the request of Unit Coordinators, Lecturers, Tutors and other teaching staff. Teaching staff are invited by EQD, via an email notification, to request a Teaching Evaluation during the survey preparation period.

If requested, students will be invited to provide their feedback using the following two sets of questions:

Quantitative

2.1 - The lecturer(s) demonstrated thorough knowledge of the subject area
2.2 - The lecturer(s) provided clear and appropriate answers to student questions
2.3 - The lecturer(s) treated all students fairly and equally
2.4 - The lecturer(s) encouraged participation and/or questions
2.5 - The lecturer(s) made effective use of teaching aids and media where appropriate
2.6 - The lecturer(s) were available for consultation and individual help where needed
2.7 - Overall, the lecturer(s) were effective in facilitating my learning
2.8 - I would recommend that other students take a unit taught by the lecturer(s)

Qualitative

2.9 - Indicate the major strengths of the lecturer(s) that you have seen of experienced this semester
2.10 - Indicate any areas for improvement that you feel the lecturer(s) could work on developing into strengths

Results of the evaluation are made available to the Unit Coordinator/s, Lecturer/s or Tutor/s of the unit that has been assessed.

Teaching evaluations are private to the individual named on the survey. However, in the event of a serious complaint being received regarding the teaching of a unit, relevant evaluation information may be made available to the Head of School, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Dean.

Intensive School Evaluation Surveys

Intensive School Evaluation Surveys are conducted on request only and they are the only surveys that are still predominantly paper-based. This is due to some Intensive Schools being non-mandatory, resulting in varying attendance rates. By conducting these surveys on paper, we can ensure that only attendees of the Intensive School are invited to participate.

Surveys may be requested for Intensive School periods prior to commencement of the trimester, for the mid-trimester break or any time outside these designated periods. Prior to the running of Intensive Schools, an email is sent out to UNE email addresses to notify that EQD is accepting requests for Intensive School Evaluations.

Please direct requests for Intensive School Evaluation Surveys to our Evaluations Officer at evaluati@une.edu.au, stating the:

  • Unit title
  • Unit mode (internal, external or both)
  • Location (Armidale, UNE Sydney, Adelaide etc) and
  • The dates of the Intensive School.
