Guidelines for various groups of instruments

Please note that backing tracks are acceptable accompaniment.

Brass and woodwinds

Particular attention given to tone production, dynamic contrast and phrasing as well as varied and clearly defined articulations.

If selecting a piece from the jazz repertoire, it is expected that you will improvise over one or two choruses.

Bowed strings

Particular attention given to tone production, bow control, intonation, dynamic contrast and variety of articulation.

Selections made from non-classical repertoire (e.g. Celtic, gypsy jazz etc) will demonstrate these same musical & technical criteria.

Vocals (includes singer-songwriters)

Particular attention given to tone production, projection and air support. It is expected that your presentation will be appropriate for the style chosen. If you are accompanying yourself on piano or guitar for example, then attention should be also be given to the role of the of the accompaniment in your performance.

Piano and keyboard

Particular attention given to articulation and clarity of touch, dynamics and phrasing. Evidence of systematic fingering and effective use of the sustaining pedal should be clear. The contrasting works should display differing technical skills, such as an emphasis on passage work/articulation in one work and pedaling and tone production/voicing in the other.

Organ

Particular attention given to articulation and clarity of touch, phrasing and dynamics (through swell pedal, if appropriate), and use of stops. Evidence of systematic fingering/footing should be clear. The contrasting works should display differing technical skills, such as control of dynamics, use of stops, passage work, peddling etc.

Drums and percussion

Drums

Ability to play a variety of differing rhythmic organisations or "feels" (for example swing, funk, rock, reggae, samba etc) with particular attention given to dynamic and tone control, rhythmic stability and general limb independence. At least one of your pieces should demonstrate your abilities in accompanying others in an ensemble context.

Percussion

Abilities on both pitched and unpitched percussion, with particular attention given to dynamic and tone control, rhythmic stability and hand independence.

Guitar and plucked strings

Demonstration of both finger-style and plectrum techniques as may be applicable for your instrument's associated repertoire. Variety of tone colour and dynamic control, rhythmic stability and finger independence should be demonstrated.

As for brass and woodwind, if selecting from jazz (or rock/blues) repertoire, demonstration of some improvisation in accordance with appropriate stylistic parameters will be expected.
