Instrumental and Vocal Studies Program

UNE has developed exciting partnerships with NSW regional conservatoria where students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music can undertake instrumental tuition under the guidance of highly experienced teachers and tutors.

As Australia’s premiere provider of online tertiary music studies, this program is unique to UNE; the only regional university in NSW to provide face-to-face music tuition within a fully online Bachelor of Music degree. These partnerships provide local students the opportunity to combine traditional instrumental or vocal tuition with a range of online units in performance, composition, music technology, and musicology, delivered by UNE staff through the online learning platform. Students can take advantage of UNE staff and activities, in addition to participating in a larger music community through the online learning environment.

How does the program work?

Students in the Bachelor of Music can apply to complete a series of instrumental or vocal training units through their local regional conservatorium. Utilising each regional conservatorium’s strengths in instrumental and vocal tuition, each unit incorporates weekly one-on-one instrumental lessons alongside a host of activities provided by the partnering institution. These activities include participation in large and small ensembles, master classes and workshops with world-class special guest musicians, accompanying and/or conducting work, and concerts and public performances. This program supports Work Integrated Learning where students can develop skills in performance management, ensemble development, and community music through their own initiatives with the support from both their host institution and UNE.

The units are offered in Trimesters 1 and 2 to align with the conservatoria’s semesters. They explore the repertoire and essential skills in technique, expression and performance appropriate to the student's individual development. Students focus on the stylistic and interpretative characteristics of repertoire as well as performance planning, individual preparation, practice, and rehearsal management. Throughout the trimester, students will keep a logbook of performance, practice, planning and rehearsal activities, culminating in a live performance at the end of the unit.

"UNE's partnership with Coffs Harbour Conservatorium has given me the amazing opportunity to be able to study a Bachelor of Music while living in a town that I love without missing out on some of the most important lessons that can only be gained through one-on-one tutorials."

Frequently Asked Questions

There doesn’t appear to be a partnered conservatorium in my area. Can I still complete the Bachelor of Music?

UNE Music offers two options for a Performance Major. If there is no partnered conservatorium in your area, you are able to study a range of alternate online performance units to complete a Performance Major. These include online collaboration, performance training, and other creative projects.

Do the conservatoriums offer lessons online via Zoom?

Students should attend lessons in person and be on site to take advantage of other activities including ensembles and accompaniment lessons.

Can I organise a tutor directly with a conservatorium?

You can contact the conservatoriums to discuss potential tutors in your chosen instrument or voice. However, UNE will need to ensure the tutor’s suitability before you enrol in this program. Please contact alana.blackburn@une.edu.au.

Can I receive tuition for multiple instruments?

The program is flexible and tailored to your interests and abilities. This will need to be discussed with your tutor and the UNE Unit Coordinator.
