As a result of changes in regulations in regards to fire prevention and in consultation with the New South Wales Fire Brigade and the Armidale Dumaresq Council in late 2009 UNE has undertaken to upgrade the UNE Residential Buildings that  were found to be inadequate in regard to the fire safety provisions of the Building Code of Australia. The main areas to be upgraded  were the compartmentisation of the living accommodation, existing fire detection and early warning systems, smoke separation and the egress paths of travel to exit the buildings to ensure safe and orderly egress in the event of fire. A scope of works was developed with the New South Wales Fire Brigade representative and the Armidale Dumaresq Council to address shortfalls. These works are now in progress with Mary White College, Duval College, Drummond & Smith College and Austin College works now fully completed with Earl Page College expected to be completed by Early January 2013. The remaining works involving the UNE Colleges Balustrades is at present out to Tender with works commencing January 2013 and be ongoing until December of that year.
