UNE students recognised for meat judging success

UNE students and alumni have once again been recognised for their expertise in the meat judging space, having received a plethora of awards at the 2023 Northern Intercollegiate Meat Judging Association (ICMJ) Competition last week.

Fourth-year Bachelor of Rural Science student Angus MacDonald was crowned the winner of the Commercial Evaluation (University) category, while Bachelor of Agriculture/Business student Tahlia Morgan placed runner up in the Overall Placings (University) category.

Angus and Tahlia also placed second alongside fellow UNE students, Matilda Paesler and Rowan Vallance, in the Overall Placings (University) teams category. Several UNE graduates were also among this year’s prize-winners.

The competition was the final instalment of the annual three-day ICMJ Northern Conference, which gave 15 UNE students valuable networking opportunities and a taste of life in the meat industry.

“The experience has complemented my studies through hearing about how members in the industry are using meat science research and technologies to further improve their productions systems,” said Angus, who is considering a career in the agricultural industry when he finishes his degree.

“I have greatly enjoyed being part of the meat judging team and furthering my understanding of the beef supply chain.”

UNE’s team of students will now prepare to compete in the national competition this July in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
