The UNE People and Culture Directorate in partnership with The UNE Metro and Regions Directorate are running an Art Competition. As the UNE footprint has expanded to now include Tamworth, Taree and Parramatta, The University of New England would like to invite descendants from Anaiwan, Gomeroi, Biripi and Dharug peoples to submit a piece of artwork that will be for used in the new Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2025-2029 and other marketing material of UNE.

The University of New England is currently developing the new Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2025-2029 that will ultimately guide and inform UNE to assist and drive us to increase employment participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The People and Culture Art Competition aims to celebrate employment, education, culture and the resilience of our communities and are inviting Aboriginal artists to submit a single piece of artwork encompassing one or all of those themes.

Please note:

  • The competition is open to Anaiwan, Gomeroi, Biripi and Dharug descendants only.
  • The winning four artworks will be awarded cash prize of $1000 each artwork.
  • Open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and their family members.
  • Artwork is to be on a 30.5cm x 40.6cm canvas and artist is to submit an image for judging purposes

Submissions must be emailed to People and Culture via od@une.edu.au by Midnight Sunday October 6 2024. Submissions entered after the closing date will not be considered.

Terms and Conditions

General
  1. This Aboriginal Artwork competition is being conducted by People and Culture (UNE) for use in the Aboriginal Employment Strategy 2025-2029 and other UNE marketing material, internal training packages including Cultural Connections, Aboriginal Employment webpage, and the artwork will be displayed at each UNE campus location Armidale, Tamworth, Taree and Sydney. UNE will contact the artist to inform them of where their artwork will be used. UNE may also frame pictures and reserves the right to frame all winning entries.
  2. To the extent of any inconsistency between these Terms and Conditions and any other reference to this competition, these Terms and Conditions prevail.
  3. Information on how to enter and prizes form part of the Terms and Conditions. Entry into this competition deems acceptance of these Terms and Conditions.
  4. UNE reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions or to cancel or suspend this competition if an event beyond the control of UNE corrupts or affects the administration security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this competition. UNE will disqualify any individual who has tampered with the entry process or any other aspect of this competition.
  5. All entrants warrant that they have capacity to provide the consents contained in these Terms and Conditions.
Who can enter?
  1. The UNE People and Culture Aboriginal Artwork Competition (the Competition) is only open to persons who are Aboriginal and are descendant from Anaiwan, Gomeroi, Biripi, Dhurug and who live on or off Country. If you are not a descendant of one of the Nations named above you will not be eligible.
  2. Aboriginal students who fit the criteria in Clause 2.1 are strongly encouraged to submit entries.
  3. There is no age limit on entering the Competition. For participants under 18 years of age a parent or guardian consent is required. The consenting guardian is then bound by these Terms and Conditions.
  4. UNE employees and their family are eligible to enter the Competition.
How to enter
  1. Entries will be accepted from September 9, 2024 to midnight October 6, 2024 (4 weeks). No entries will be accepted after 11:59pm on October 6, 2024.
  2. Entrants must follow the submission guidelines below and each entry must comply with these Terms and Conditions.
  3. Entrants can submit entries to People and Culture through od@une.edu.au
  4. Entries must meet the Technical Specifications as follows:
    1. Images of  the artwork should be saved as a High-Quality JPEG where possible
    2. Images must be larger than 1MB but must not exceed 4MB for judging purposes
    3. The winners will be expected to submit the original painting to UNE once winner is announced. UNE will cover the cost of any postage required.
    4. The Story behind the artwork, including how the design relates and represents the importance of community, partnerships and education as a theme for the painting must be provided.
    5. Artwork is to be on a 30.5cm x 40.6cm canvas
  5. UNE is not responsible for any misdirected, late or incomprehensible entries in the Competition.
Submission guidelines
  1. Each entry must be an original artwork produced entirely by the entrant. It must not contain any trademarks or copyright material owned in whole or in part by any other person or violate any persons’ rights of privacy.
  2. Each artwork entered into the competition must not identify a person in any way or identify a person’s property such as their home, address or licence plate, without that person’s express written permission.  Any entry which identifies a person in any way without their express written permission (which must be provided at the time of submission of the entry) will be disqualified from the Competition.
  3. All details provided by the entrant must be true and accurate.
  4. The entrant is responsible for determining the appropriate permissions or releases that may be required for their entries.
  5. Entrants must not plagiarise the work of any other person.
  6. Entries that are found to breach these Terms and Conditions will be considered invalid and, if awarded a prize, that prize must be returned to UNE.
  7. The winners may be required to sign a statutory declaration regarding the originality of the entry.
  8. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, UNE reserves the right to take legal action against anyone found to have breached these terms.
  9. UNE reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who UNE has reason to believe has breached any of these conditions, or engaged in any unlawful or other improper misconduct calculated to jeopardise the fair and proper conduct of the Competition. UNE’s legal rights to recover damages or other compensation are reserved.
Deliberation
  1. The initial review of artwork images will be completed by a panel of five (5) members of the UNE People and Culture Directorate and Oorala Aboriginal Centre (the Panel).
  2. Shortlisted semi-finalists will not win a prize as a result of being shortlisted.
  3. If any of the shortlisted artwork images are found to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions, they will be disqualified.
  4. The second round of the deliberation process will be decided by the Panel using the following criteria:
    1. Artwork story (each area mentioned)
    2. Originality
    3. Overall rating
  5. There will be no correspondence between entrants and committee throughout this process.
  6. After the winners are notified, they must submit the original of their artwork to UNE within two (2) weeks of being notified or they will be disqualified and will not receive a prize. UNE will assist with this process and cover the cost of any postage.
Prizes
  1. The winning four (4) entries will each be awarded a prize in the form of a $1,000 prize for each winning entry, deposited to their bank account.
  2. Prize recipients must be agreed upon by the Panel.
  3. Winners will be announced during the month of November 2024 through the UNE website and social media, also via email supplied by winning artist. Entrants consent to UNE using their winning artwork entry and their name when announcing the winners.
  4. All decisions from the Panel are final.
  5. Any prize recipients subsequently found by UNE to have breached these Terms and Conditions must return any awarded prize within 30 days of a request to do so. UNE will have the final decision on what to do with the prizes.
  6. UNE will not be responsible for any costs associated with winning or delivery of the prizes unless specifically stated in these Terms and Conditions.
  7. Prizes will be transferred into winners’ bank account within 30 days of being notified.
Rights
  1. All copyright in each artwork submitted to the Competition remains with the artist / entrant.
  2. UNE asserts no claims to the rights of any artwork entered into the Competition.
  3. By entering the Competition, entrants grant UNE a non-exclusive, irrevocable, right to copy, publish, communicate, perform, play, re-broadcast, adapt and modify the whole or parts of the artwork in any format, platform, server, database, or communication channel, that is currently available and those which may be available in the future, for any use or purpose that UNE deems appropriate.
  4. If UNE uses any artwork as set out above, the artist / entrant will be credited.
  5. If an entrant wishes to withdraw consent to the use of their entry in future publications after 5 years, the entrant can do so by contacting director-pandc@une.edu.au. UNE will make every effort to cease using the entry in any future publications after the consent is withdrawn but is not obliged to remove the entry from any publications published in any format prior to the consent being withdrawn.
  6. UNE will not be liable for any third-party misuse of images.
Privacy Collection Statement
  1. This Competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook, Twitter or any other social network. The entrant is providing information to UNE and not to any other party. The information provided will be used in accordance with UNE’s Privacy Management Rule.
  2. By submitting an entry into this Competition entrants consent to receive promotional and other marketing messages from UNE (including messages sent electronically for an unlimited period of time). Entrants will be able to opt-out at any time by following the instructions included in each message sent by UNE.
  3. UNE and its related entities collect entrants’ personal information for the purpose of conducting and promoting this Competition including but not limited to determining and notifying winners. UNE may also disclose personal information collected to Australian regulatory authorities. UNE will otherwise handle your personal information in accordance with UNE’s Privacy Management Rule.
  4. You may request access to or update your personal information or lodge a complaint by writing to the Privacy Officer, at privacy@une.edu.au
Liability and Governing Law
  1. Nothing in these Terms and Conditions limits, excludes or modifies or purports to limit, exclude or modify the statutory consumer guarantees as provided under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), as well as any other implied warranties under similar consumer protection laws in the State and Territories of Australia (‘Non-Excludable Guarantees’). For any Non-Excludable Guarantee in relation to any prizes awarded under these Terms and Conditions for which UNE is able to limit the remedy for a breach, the liability of UNE for breach of the Non-Excludable Guarantee is limited to one or more of the following at the Promoter’s option:
    1. the replacement of the prize; or
    2. the supplying of the prize again.
  2. With respect to this Competition, except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded, including the Non-Excludable Guarantees, UNE (including its respective officers, employees and agents) is not responsible for and excludes all liability (including for negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way out of, relating to, or in any way connected with: (a) any technical difficulties or equipment malfunction (whether or not under UNE’s control); (b) any theft, unauthorised access or third party interference; (c) any entry or prize claim that is late, lost, altered, damaged or misdirected (whether or not after their receipt by UNE) due to any reason beyond the reasonable control of UNE; or (d) any tax liability incurred by a winner or entrant.
  3. To the maximum extent permitted by law, UNE expressly disclaims liability for any loss or damage whatsoever (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) or for any personal injury which is suffered or sustained in connection with any entrant’s participation in the Competition or the acceptance of the prizes. The winners indemnify UNE against any liability, injury, loss or damage which may be suffered, incurred or sustained by UNE arising out of, relating to, or in any way connected with, any act or omission (including negligence) by the winners, or their use of the prizes, or their breach of these Terms and Conditions.
  4. The competition is governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. Each entrant irrevocably agrees that the courts of New South Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to hear and decide any suit, action or proceedings and/or to settle any disputes which may arise out of or in connection with the competition and, for these purposes, each entrant irrevocably submits to the exclusive and binding jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales, Australia.
