Acknowledgement of Country
The University of New England respects and acknowledges that its people, programs and facilities are built on land, and surrounded by a sense of belonging, both ancient and contemporary, of the world's oldest living culture.
In doing so, UNE values and respects Indigenous knowledge systems as a vital part of the knowledge capital of Australia.
words written by Debra Bennell
From its inception as Australia’s first regional university, the University of New England has worked to deliver higher education to anyone with the capability and determination to undertake it.
UNE’s first Vice-Chancellor, Robert Madgwick, pioneered distance education in the 1950s. Madgwick (later Sir Robert) was driven by an unusually democratic understanding of this university's role.
We work to develop and deliver innovative teaching, distinguished by flexibility and accessibility. For 17 years in a row, UNE has earned the Good Universities Guide's top "five star" rating for the quality of its student experience. No other Australian university shares this unbroken run of student approval.
We are a regional university with an international footprint. UNE's research ranges widely over the traditional disciplines, but it especially excels in providing practical solutions to challenges confronting our communities. In fields like Agriculture and Education, UNE research is having a global impact.
Those who join the UNE community adopt this heritage, but will also be called on to guide the University to future success in turbulent times.
Madgwick's spirit lives on at UNE.
"...to find out what people want, give it to them ... and never take the easy way and start with what the University thinks they need."
