Peter Hemphill Travelling Scholarship

Background

Dr Peter Hemphill, Lecturer in Law and long-term Senior Common Room member made a generous gift to Earle Page College.  This gift supports the creation of a number of annual travelling scholarships for current and recently graduated residents of Earle Page College.

The scholarships are to support study at a university, or other learned institution, in any of the following European countries: Italy, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Czech Republic, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Luxembourg. Preference may be given to students intending to study in Italy.

Who can apply?
  1. Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident: The applicant must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident as defined by the Commonwealth
  2. Living in College: Open to current residents or former residents of Earle Page College and Austin & Earle Page College who have resided in college within the past 3 years (2021 - 2023).
  3. Student and Course Requirement:
    1. Open to current students or Earle Page/Austin & Earle Page alumni enrolled/planning to enrol in a university or other learned institution in any of the following European countries: Italy, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Czech Republic, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Luxembourg.
    2. Preference may be given to students intending to study in Italy.
    3. Course of study must be for a minimum of three (3) months duration.

Notes
  • The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships.
  • The Selection Committee may decide not to award the scholarship if no suitable applications are received.
  • The Selection Committee shall be comprised of:
    • The Head of Austin and Earle Page College (Chair), or their nominee;
    • Austin and Earle Page College Academic Master (casting vote), or nominee;
    • Austin and Earle Page College Senior Common Room President, or nominee;
    • Austin and Earle Page College Junior Common Room President, or nominee;
    • In the event that none of the above are members of UNE academic staff, an academic staff member of the SCR may be co-opted to the selection Committee for academic input and advice.
  • By applying for this scholarship you, the applicant, permit the University to give some personal details contained in your application to the Committee, who may not be UNE staff. All information gathered will be treated with discretion.
  • The Selection Committee’s decision is final.
Supporting documents/required information

Applications should use the UNE Scholarships Application form provided (see below "How to apply"). The following  should be attached to the form:

  1. Evidence of application for admission to an appropriate course of study
  2. A resumé of academic, professional and extracurricular experience
  3. Evidence of contribution to the College community (if available)
  4. Three references must be supplied, including one academic reference
  5. Any further documentation which the Selection Panel may from time to time request
  6. Proposed Itinerary (including airfare and costs where appropriate)

On the application form, complete the Statement of Case outlining:

  1. Why are you studying your chosen course and what are your career aspirations?
  2. Tell us about your personal strengths, leadership, and community activities you are involved in. How you have used them to make a difference in the lives of others?
  3. What impact will NOT receiving the scholarship have on your studies?
  4. What special conditions or obstacles have you overcome in your path to study? e.g. financial, geographic, cultural, or other disadvantage. Tell us what you have done to address your situation, in light of the challenges you outlined.
How to apply

Applications for the Peter Hemphill Travelling Scholarship should be made through the Application for University of New England Scholarship/s Form.

Only complete applications will be processed, so please ensure that you have submitted all required documentation with your application. The UNE Alumni Relations and Student Scholarships team will notify you via email when your application has been processed.

Conditions

General Conditions

  1. The scholarship is intended for the nominated course and period of study and may not be deferred or transferred without the written approval of the Selection Panel.
  2. The scholarship may comprise a combination of direct payments for course fees, airfares, etc., plus any residual payment made directly to the recipient/s' bank account.
  3. Any request to vary the terms and/or conditions of the scholarship must be made in writing and will be determined at the discretion of the Alumni Relations and Student Scholarships Committee (in consultation with relevant Donor/Trustee/Committee/School/Head of College).
  4. If at any time during the scholarship term the student is found to have committed behavioural misconduct in accordance with the University’s Student Behavioural Misconduct Rules, the scholarship will be terminated and any outstanding payments to be made under the scholarship will not be paid.  You may also be required to repay any instalment already received. Students who are residential college residents are also subject to the Residential College Code of Conduct.
  5. The student may be required to attend the annual scholarships donor event if they are invited to do so, and may be asked to participate in activities to promote this scholarship and other scholarships in general, including public speaking, donor liaison, media interviews and photographs.
  6. Some scholarships may affect other government payments (e.g. Centrelink). It is the recipient’s responsibility to seek advice from the relevant government agency.
  7. From time to time minor changes may be required to the administrative conditions of this scholarship. If this occurs, recipients will be given advance notice in writing. Donors will also be consulted where appropriate.
  8. Failure to meet the requirements of these Terms and Conditions may lead to the termination of the scholarship and your being required to repay any instalment already received.

Scholarship Specific Conditions

Payment

  1. The scholarship amount shall be at the discretion of the Selection Committee.
  2. The scholarship may comprise a combination of direct payments for course fees, airfares, etc., plus any residual payment made directly to the recipients.
  3. Scholarship funds must be expended before the end of the calendar year following the award date.

Recipient Obligations

  1. The recipient must take out comprehensive travel insurance.
  2. Within 4 weeks of the end of the overseas study, the recipient must provide a 1,000-word report to:
    1. Head of College, Earle Page College
    2. advance@une.edu.au

    The report will address the study experience and benefits of receiving the scholarship.  The report may be provided to the donors.

Consents

  1. The recipient agrees to their photo and biography being used by UNE for promotional purposes.

Risks and Conduct

  1. The recipient acknowledges that overseas travel includes an element of risk and travels at their own risk.
  2. The recipient acknowledges that the Selection Committee and UNE are not liable for any loss suffered in connection with their travel and study and waives all claims against the Selection Committee and UNE connected with their travel and study.

Termination

  1. UNE may terminate the scholarship if the recipient:
    1. Commits behavioural misconduct under the Student Behaviour Misconduct Rules,
    2. Breaches the Residential College Code of Conduct, or
    3. Breaches the Scholarship conditions
  2. If UNE terminates the Scholarship no further scholarship payments will be made and the recipient may be required to repay scholarship payments already paid to them.
Acceptance

In accepting the Peter Hemphill Travelling Scholarship, the recipient acknowledges that they have read, understand and accept the terms and conditions outlined above.
