Unit information
History has demonstrated that positive political, economic and social changes can occur when people unite to employ nonviolent methods.
This unit begins with an overview of the essential elements of nonviolence before discussing historical and contemporary case studies such as the Black Lives Matter Movement, Australia’s environmental activism and the complexities of the Arab Spring and activism in Hong Kong, Sudan, Myanmar, Palestine and Ukraine. You will look at the evolution of nonviolence since Gandhi, and the contemporary relevance of nonviolence as an alternative to the terrible human waste of war and militarism.
The unit examines how nonviolence works, its ‘consent’ theory of power, and its strategies and tactics, such as blockades and boycotts. You’ll explore where and when nonviolence can succeed even against ruthless opponents and totalitarian regimes, and we will discuss the artistic, spiritual and personal aspects of nonviolence.

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
