Unit information
This unit is designed to help you develop a broad and coherent knowledge of Australia’s place in the world – and its shifting identities - in the twentieth century.
Emphasis is placed on changing relations with Great Britain, the United States of America and Asia, as well as foreign and defence policies in their social, political, economic and cultural contexts, and related larger shifts in Australian national identity.
You will also develop your critical thinking and communication skills through assignment work and independent research.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of the changing place of Australia in the world, and the shifting Australian identities that have been the corollary of such changes;
- demonstrate a firm grasp of the major themes in the history of Australian foreign and defence policies over a century;
- analyse and evaluate the main reasons for change and stability in Australian foreign and defence policies over a century;
- apply well developed cognitive and communication skills to evaluate and communicate the nature of debate and revisionism in modern historical studies;
- apply an understanding of the role of primary sources in the writing of international history; and
- present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas through structured prose.
