Unit information
Start your teaching career with an understanding of the strengths and challenges of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a professional, you will be in a position to enhance your students’ learning and support them and their families as they navigate the education system.
In this unit you will engage in critical discussion about the theoretical explanations for ASD. You will focus on the development and learning of students with ASD, and study the evidence based teaching practices and interventions used for learners with ASD.
You will investigate the collaborative practices that best support students diagnosed with ASD in special and inclusive settings, and in everyday living.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the main strengths and challenges of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD);
- engage in a critical discussion about the development and learning of students with ASD;
- demonstrate a professional understanding of evidence-based teaching and intervention for learners with ASD;
- analyse current educational practices in light of the evidence base for teaching and intervention for students with ASD; and
- demonstrate insight into family needs and critically evaluate the role of professionals in supporting individuals with ASD and their families.
