Unit information
This unit examines the development of our attitudes and approaches to law and order through a study of some of the most infamous crimes and criminals in the British world between 1700 and 1900.
You will consider a series of case studies ranging broadly over space and time, from both historical and criminological perspectives. This will reveal both changing patterns of deviance and criminal behaviour and the evolving efforts to regulate and prevent it.
As such, you will learn how to find, use and evaluate evidence about crime and use it to deepen your understanding of the development of modern society.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge of important moments and individuals in the history of crime;
- apply well developed cognitive and communication skills to explain why case-studies are useful and important in the social sciences;
- demonstrate autonomy and well-developed judgement in finding, evaluating and synthesising evidence effectively; and
- apply initiative and judgment in the writing and presentation of evidence-based historical analysis, according to the methodological and ethical conventions of the discipline.
