Unit information
An understanding of how human populations change is foundational to appreciating contemporary society and the issues it faces.
This unit provides you with an introduction to the various components of population change - fertility, mortality and migration - through case studies drawn from contemporary Australia. You will explore a number of themes: the concept of 'carrying capacity'; the question of an ecologically sustainable population; the relationship between socio-economic change and migration; and the use of demographic data as a planning tool.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the interrelationship between human population and the physical environment with an ability to articulate this to others;
- critically evaluate the components of population change and its related concepts;
- determine how population dynamics impact on Australian society from a planning and policy perspective; and
- demonstrate proficiency in foundation level demographic techniques with the ability to apply these to solve diverse problems.
