Unit information
Equity and justice are important issues for good functioning societies.
This unit explores how issues are identified as social and crime 'problems' and how such categorisation influences the search for solutions, justice and social order.
You will investigate various social issues (such as economic inequality; health and substance problems; family problems; culture, race, ethnicity and marginalisation; sexuality and gender inequality; and social control) and their connection to crime and victimisation.
'Justice' is a key theme throughout the trimester and you will question how justice can be pursued, observed, and how it can fail, in our topics.
The unit will be relevant to you if you are seeking a career in the criminal justice and legal system, human services (including social work) and the health care system. You will investigate examples from Australian context along with the international context for comparison.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
