Unit information
If you are an international student with a recognised health-related degree or nursing diploma and you wish to gain registration as a nurse in Australia, you will commence your studies with this unit. This unit explores the professional, legal and ethical regulations within the Australian context, encompassing safe scope of practice and standards for practice as Australian Registered Nurses.
Building your knowledge of fundamental care, the unit combines a range of simulated clinical activities with 160 hours of supervised, off-campus professional placement experience.
With opportunities to translate your knowledge into practice, you will plan and document care, and work to enhance patient safety through appropriate infection control, wound care, manual handling and professional communication. You will also safely administer common medications by different routes.

This unit includes 160 hours of professional experience placement.
Professional experience placements will only be arranged for students who meet pre-clinical requirements in the first eight weeks of their enrolment in the course and maintain the currency of these requirements throughout the duration of the course.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe the legal, ethical, professional, organisational and political contexts of healthcare in Australia, and relate these to the roles and responsibilities of Registered Nurses in Australia;
- discuss the roles, responsibilities and scope of practice of the Australian Registered Nurse as a member of the interprofessional team, including with the use of digital health, under the NMBA Australian Registered Nurse Standards of Practice;
- develop and demonstrate competence when communicating with clients across the lifespan and with various health professionals encompassing cultural diversity, working as an effective member of the interprofessional team;
- collect and interpret information in order to assess clients; plan nursing care and accurately document information fundamental to nursing practice in clinical records;
- apply and critique the principles of quality use of medicines to safely administer oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular and topical medication, demonstrating patient assessment, documentation, and reporting requirements using digital technologies in the simulated and professional experience placement (PEP) settings; and
- apply and justify infection control principles and occupational health and safety practices within the workplace with an emphasis on basic wound care and manual handling.
