Unit information
Build the foundation for your career in social work, with an introduction to the defining features of the profession: core practice methods, theories, and fields of practice and organisations within which social workers are employed.
In this unit, you will develop valuable understanding of the purpose, function and roles of social work, and how these have evolved in an era of rapid social change.
You will have the opportunity to explore a diverse array of social care programs and services to understand how social workers meet the needs of individuals and groups across the lifespan.
You will examine core practice methods such as case management, counselling, group work, advocacy, community development, management and social activism that are central to addressing issues which arise from social problems.
The unit also offers insights into the practice framework concept and various theories and models for intervention, along with their strengths and limitations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and understand the foundational characteristics of professional social work, and how these address its societal purpose, functions and roles;
- identify and apply the concept of a practice framework to professional practice in social work;
- recognise and assess the role of a social worker;
- describe the breadth of social work across diverse practice fields and contexts, and examine the implications on workforce development; and
- identify and describe social work's core practice methods and theories, and reflectively evaluate their fit with their own approaches to social work.
