Unit information
Contemporary French culture is rich and diverse, and exposure to its literature, film, media and music will not only broaden your cultural knowledge but also improve your comprehension and expression skills in French.
In this unit you will study a range of written, aural and visual contemporary French works and will gain an understanding of some of the social, cultural and economic factors which shape metropolitan France today.
The studied works have been selected to increase your exposure to the French language at an accessible level, and the weekly tasks, lectures and tutorials have been carefully designed to help you hone your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
This unit will enhance your understanding of French culture.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically examine and comprehend literary texts and other cultural production in French;
- provide basic analysis and commentary on the texts studied;
- demonstrate further understanding of, and effectively employ, French vocabulary and structures found in, or appropriate to, a variety of text-types, media and cultural contexts, at an intermediate level; and
- apply extended knowledge of French and Francophone cultures and societies within the context of the texts and authors studied.
