Unit information
Literacy is a critical aspect of all secondary classrooms. Composing texts across the curriculum requires knowing the fundamental elements of English grammar.
This unit will help you to develop and refine your knowledge of grammar and text types. The unit covers the functional approach to language that underpins primary and secondary education, develops an understanding of grammatical concepts and their application.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of how language and image are used to create effective written and multimodal texts, including knowledge of context and language at text, paragraph, sentence and word levels;
- demonstrate knowledge of text types, grammar and image, relevant to the Australian Curriculum: English and/or the NSW English K-10 Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum;
- apply knowledge of context, text and grammar to their own writing;
- analyse student need, assess student progress and achievement against curriculum achievement standards and syllabus outcomes for writing and multimodal text composition;
- identify and evaluate resources and programs to support students' writing and multimodal text composition; and
- design an engaging lesson sequence based on the teaching-learning cycle for writing and multimodal text composition in English or other curriculum learning areas for students with a range of learning needs.
