Unit information
This unit will develop your understanding that 'all history is contemporary history' (Benedetto Croce), and its study is concerned just as much with the present as the past.
It explores history as a key device where collective and personal identities are constructed and challenged. It is ideal if you are interested in history and its function as an extension of major debates in the contemporary world.
As such, the scope includes how histories are essential to maintaining national identities and power-structures, how histories are contested by different groups and how local histories are essential to a sense of community. You will also explore the use of heroic biographies to perpetuate values/roles, how genealogy and family histories foster a sense of individual identity in today's world, and the use and misuse of history commercially.

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
