Unit information
Critical and creative reflection on any type of literature is important for all students of literature. It is through reflection that we are able to learn from our experiences and devise strategies for framing further academic questions.
Delving into an imaginary universe and becoming absorbed by its stories and characters is one of the great pleasures available to readers of the fantasy genre.
In this unit you will analyse your own reading experience in relation to theories concerning the reader’s reception and the writer’s production of texts.
You will consider the role fantasy plays in contemporary culture and explore the worlds it producers for readers and fans. You will be asked to analyse the skills necessary for writing fantasy literature, and apply those skills in creative or critical assessment tasks.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
