Unit information
Integrate your knowledge in this unit which aims to strengthen your understanding of educational strategies that provide effective teaching for students with disabilities or learning difficulties. As part of this unit you will complete the mandatory special and inclusive education content required for teachers employed in public schools (in NSW).

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements, principles and policies that support participation and learning of students with learning difficulties or disability with reference to the principles of codes of ethics and conduct (GTSD 1.6.1, 7.1.1, 7.2.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of capabilities for learning (thinking, social interaction, language and literacies, and self-management) and how these may affect achievement for students who experience disability or learning difficulties (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1);
- justify the application of teaching strategies to maintain a safe learning environment that supports full participation and engagement in activities, safety and wellbeing and mental health for all students, and explicitly teaches for sound literacy and numeracy learning for students with disability or learning difficulties (GTSD 1.6.1, 2.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 4.1.1, 4.3.1, 4.4.1, 5.4.1);
- demonstrate awareness of models and research that inform differentiated teaching, with focuses on disability, learning difficulties, and cultural diversity (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.5.1, 3.4.1, 6.2.1); and
- demonstrate a professional understanding of individual support cycles, services and resources available to teachers of students with special needs including students from different cultural backgrounds (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and strategies for collaborating with parents, caregivers and other professionals (GTSD 1.4.1, 3.7.1, 5.5.1, 7.3.1, 7.4.1).
