Unit information
This unit focuses on traditional Indigenous societies, culture contact, adaptation and change. It highlights the relationship between Indigenous peoples, land, politics and philosophy and how these have been impacted by colonisation and the modern world.
You will evaluate the practices and theories of a range of ethnographers who have worked with Indigenous communities and apply conceptual and independent critical thinking skills to analyse the interrelationship of Indigenous communities and the dominant political leadership at the time. You will also evaluate the similarities and differences between Australian and International Indigenous experiences.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply advanced research and presentation skills to communicate coherent, sustained, theoretically and contextually informed aruments demonstrating an advanced body of knowledge and ideas about Indigenous peoples in particular, 'colonisation', 'culture', 'cultural relativism', 'adaptation' and 'land';
- investigate ethnographers' various theoretical approaches and interpretations of Indigenous societies;
- apply conceptual and autonomous cognitive skills to synthesise complex information and analyse the interrelationship of Indigenous communities and hegemony;
- critically appraise the socio-economic and cultural factors initiating and determining contact between Indigenous and British settler societies;
- analyse the effects of past Western philosophies and politics on interactions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups; and
- critically evaluate the similarities and differences between Australian and international Indigenous experiences.
