Future proof your career by studying applied linguistics and gaining a deeper understanding of the complexities of human communication. Analyse how language works in social, personal and professional environments.
This unit introduces you to the main strands of applied linguistics, giving an overview of the nature of the discipline and some of the controversies which exist within it.
You will cover topics such as: language in social context, language use, the history and practice of language teaching, discourse analysis, language attitudes and ideologies, language policy, language and the law and language in education.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand and be able to effectively communicate the diverse scope of the field of Applied Linguistics;
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of current issues and theories in applied linguistics;
- apply the major linguistic and applied linguistic terms and concepts raised in the context of this unit;
- critically analyse the major issues and themes raised in the unit; and
- undertake selected forms of linguistic analysis and research in the area of second language learning and selected areas of applied linguistics, which model skills and contribute to lifelong application in a professional career.
