Unit information
Spanish is the official language in over 20 different countries across the world and it is estimated that more than 400 million people speak Spanish as a first language.
The cognitive benefits to learning another language are many and varied. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure.
This unit is for beginners and aims to establish elementary communicative competence in Spanish. Your basic communication skills in spoken and written Spanish will be developed through the use of electronic media, reading comprehension, structural exercises and oral practice. Aspects of contemporary Hispanic culture and society will also be studied.

Notes
Students with substantial knowledge of Spanish, equivalent to HSC Spanish Continuers or above, should enrol at 200 level.
Students with existing competence in Spanish (including HSC Spanish Beginners) who are unsure of their current level of competence should contact the discipline convenor to request a placement test.
First language (Spanish) speakers may not enrol in Spanish language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.
Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate elementary listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in everyday Spanish language;
- communicate in Spanish with some depth on selected topics of everyday life;
- utilise elementary structures and functions of the Spanish language, in particular grammatical structures;
- apply elementary knowledge of Hispanic cultural and social norms and Hispanic society; and
- use cognitive skills to analyse and synthesise information when communicating at an elementary level.
