Unit information
Understanding how and why social movements impact and influence societal change, and why social justice and human rights are becoming increasingly noticed worldwide.
This unit helps to link adult learning to social movements that will equip you with professional knowledge and skills in applying knowledge to new situations and to solve complex societal problems. You will gain a thorough introduction to theories of social movement by exploring case studies of the labour, women's rights, environmental, Indigenous rights, antiwar and anti-globalisation movements as well as other progressive social movements in which you have an interest and/or involvement. You will be equipped with the knowledge and critical thinking skills you need to keep adapting and learning in a rapidly evolving world.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically reflect on and evaluate some common examples of the learning that adults undertake through participation in progressive political and social movements;
- review, discuss and evaluate different analytical and theoretical perspectives on learning in social movements;
- critically analyse specific case studies on learning in one or more social movements; and
- integrate and apply social movement learning theories, concepts, and methods to undertake an investigation of social movement learning in a particular area of interest.
