Unit information
Maritime Archaeology explores human relationships with the sea and inland waters, from earliest times to modern day. In this unit you will trace the origins of the discipline as well as the methods and theories used in maritime archaeological investigation today.
You will explore case studies from above and below the water including shipwrecks, maritime infrastructure and maritime societies. You will also review the heritage management of maritime sites and the ethical issues surrounding illegal wreck salvage and treasure hunting.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply advanced knowledge of research methods using a variety of archaeological and interdisciplinary sources of material;
- critically analyse the implications of the major interpretive frameworks and form an opinion about their respective benefits and drawbacks;
- apply advanced archaeological principles for analysing and interpreting data;
- demonstrate a well-developed understanding of how archaeologists link data to interpretation;
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated body of knowledge of the background and major contending perspectives on maritime archaeology, and present a coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas; and
- critically debate the ethical issues surrounding maritime archaeology and the trade in antiquities from maritime archaeological sites.
