Unit information
A comprehensive understanding of the interaction between motivation and emotion with other aspects of human functioning adds a valuable dimension to roles in a range of professional settings.
Studying this unit, you will examine research and theories in the related areas of motivation and emotion, extending your knowledge of the multifaceted role of factors such as health and wellbeing, individual differences and learning on human functioning.
With an emphasis on putting theory into practice, you will explore applications of motivation and emotion theory and research in different realms of life, such as interpersonal relations.
You will also examine recent advances in motivation and emotion theory and research, stimulated by positive psychology, which focuses on the development of human strengths.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the principles and research associated with theories of motivation and theories of emotional functioning;
- analyse examples using these principles, with the ability to communicate findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences in written and/or verbal format;
- evaluate the connections between motivation and emotion and other aspects of functioning;
- recognise individual differences in motivation and emotion;
- apply knowledge relating to motivation and emotion in a manner that is reflexive, culturally appropriate and sensitive to the diversity of individuals; and
- demonstrate self-directed pursuit of inquiry and application of emotion and motivation.
