Unit information
Pharmacists in community and hospital settings play a critical role in healthcare service provision for patients. With a holistic approach incorporating medicines and lifestyle education, counselling skills used in daily practice help patients to manage complex conditions.
In this unit, you will be equipped for the diverse roles and responsibilities of pharmacists in these settings.
You will explore person-centred care for complex chronic conditions, clinical pharmacy services, wound management, imaging, and pharmacy business management principles.
Building on your knowledge of the dispensing process, you will also examine the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and the requirements for supply, dispensing and claiming of PBS items on a prescription, honing your understanding of professional obligations relating to prescriptions and dispensing.

All students are required to participate in mandatory online synchronous tutorials at designated times. Information regarding the timing of and the total number of tutorials that students must attend in a teaching period will be provided by the Unit Coordinator through the unit information in the Learning Management System.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate the ability to identify and implement the most effective counselling skills used in the provision of medicines and lifestyle changes for optimal holistic management of complex chronic diseases;
- explain the principles of sound business and financial management in running a successful pharmacy business including an understanding of fair workplace conditions and the responsibilities of employer / employee;
- discuss the relevance of cultural awareness, gender politics and sexual identity, in respect to health outcomes;
- evaluate a legal prescription under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme; and
- assess the role and responsibilities of the pharmacist in provision of wound management services, medicines information and adverse drug reaction monitoring in various pharmacy settings.
