Unit information
Pharmacists play a vital role in the provision of direct healthcare services in varied, rapidly evolving contexts. This unit offers you the opportunity to apply your pharmacy practice skills, knowledge and judgement as you build understanding of professional services in different pharmacy settings, including compounding of medicines.
Studying this unit, you will explore the ways in which pharmacists provide ethical and culturally appropriate health care, within a defined scope of practice.
With a focus on person-centred care, you will learn to identify complex medication-related issues in a prescription and delve into the evidence base of complementary and alternative therapies, to provide rational recommendations to patients requesting these therapies.
You will also hone your ability to communicate this information to appropriate audiences, using various communication modalities.

Notes
On-campus students are required to attend mandatory tutorials. Online students are required to participate in mandatory online synchronous tutorials at designated times. Information regarding the timing of and the total number of tutorials that students must attend in a teaching period will be provided by the unit coordinator through the unit information in the Learning Management System.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- develop individual strategies to elicit details of the patient's health condition and medication taking behaviour to identify and resolve medication related issues;
- analyse, formulate and communicate medication related findings to an appropriate audience in appropriate language;
- discuss how various direct patient care professional services available in pharmacy settings are applied in practice;
- utilise knowledge of appropriate professional services to formulate or devise a medication action plan or justify service delivery, in negotiation with the patient as well as any other healthcare practitioners involved in patient's care;
- formulate, prepare, label and dispense advanced pharmaceutical preparations; and
- evaluate critically the literature on use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) and interpret the information as evidence based recommendations for patients in pharmacy settings.
