Unit information
This unit introduces you to professional archaeology and cultural heritage management in Australia. You will enhance your knowledge of fundamental concepts and approaches in archaeology and cultural heritage, including key theories underpinning contemporary heritage management, as well as major conventions and ethical and statutory frameworks.
You will investigate the processes and methods of heritage management, the role of archaeologists, and how our work feeds into other processes at local, state, national and even international contexts.
Drawing on case studies, you will also learn about various kinds of cultural heritage, the importance of stakeholder engagement, and major issues that can emerge in heritage projects.
The unit seeks to balance learning about conceptual issues and approaches, while also building knowledge and skills of relevance in the sector. It is well-suited to students in any discipline exploring career pathways that intersect with heritage management.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
