Unit information
The Renaissance period was one of the most formative periods in literary history. When you study this unit you will be offered an introduction to the rich diversity of early modern English poetry, prose and drama.
In this unit you will extend your knowledge of literature and examine a range of Renaissance texts in terms of the major literary developments and the powerful social, cultural and political currents of the age.
You will have the opportunity to acquire expertise in using historical context as an analytical device, and to gain an understanding of the unique literary characteristics and cultural significance of these works.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify and critically evaluate debates within the field of Renaissance literature;
- through critical analysis, demonstrate advanced knowledge of the ways by which Renaissance literary texts engage with their cultural, geographic and historical contexts;
- coherently communicate a critical analysis of a range of Renaissance literary texts; and
- apply advanced reading, writing, and research skills through the independent exposition of Renaissance literature.
