Unit information
People living in regional, rural and remote Australian communities experience complex challenges, including poorer access to health and support services and disadvantage related to education and employment opportunities.
Studying this unit with UNE’s expert team, you will develop a valuable understanding of the role and scope of the rural social worker, critiquing the ways in which practice in rural and remote settings differs to social work in urban environments.
With a particular emphasis on the landscape of remote Australia in an era of rapid social, technological and environmental change, you will gain insights into the unique ways in which these external factors influence rural individuals and families.
You will also examine service delivery in rural areas, with a focus on the needs of Indigenous people and social work practice within these communities.
The unit will also help you to enhance your communication skills across a range of media.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
