Unit information
Make a contribution to discovery in science and technology with this unit, the thesis component of UNE’s Master of Scientific Studies.
This unit offers you an opportunity to develop subject matter expertise in your chosen field. You will choose a research topic from one of the diverse areas of research available within the School, in consultation with our multidisciplinary academic staff.
Extend your capacity for independent thought and critical evaluation as you analyse and report the results of your own research project.
Successful completion of a master's thesis is a clear sign to potential employers and academic supervisors of your capacity for critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, and excellent scientific communication.
Your thesis should not normally exceed 20,000 words, excluding tables, plates, figures, references and appendices.

Notes
Prior to enrolment being approved by the Course Coordinator, students will be required to negotiate a topic or project with a nominated supervisor. Approval is dependent on the availability of supervision and resources.
Depending upon the candidate's academic and professional background and the nature of the research thesis, the School may permit the candidate to undertake, part or all, of the thesis away from the University. Some projects are unable to be undertaken online. Advanced Standing will not be granted for this unit. Candidates considering proceeding to PhD candidature are recommended to complete SCI599, if eligible.The principal supervisor must be a member of UNE staff, within the School, and as approved by the Head of School.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in a discipline of science that has been studied;
- interpret and communicate knowledge, skills and ideas to others covering a scientific discipline;
- apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, expert judgement and responsibility in conducting and reporting on original research;
- analyse critically, reflect on and synthesis complex information from their own research and the scientific literature; and
- research and apply established theories to a body of knowledge in a scientific discipline.
