Unit information
Start your teaching career as a capable, effective and professional teacher of Economics, Work Studies and Commerce in secondary schools. Understand how to interpret required state and national curriculum documents.
In this unit you will plan lessons and learning sequences and learn how to link them to elements of the NSW secondary school syllabuses for Stage 6 Economics, Years 7-10 Commerce and Years 7-10 Work Studies. You’ll also learn how to plan units of work and learning activities that cater to the diverse learning needs of your students, creating appropriate assessment tasks that link to the learning outcomes and accurately reflect student achievement.
You will also learn how to link literacy, numeracy, financial literacy, civics and citizenship, values education, ethics and sustainability to planned teaching activities in the Stage 6 Economics, Years 7-10 Commerce and Years 7-10 Work Studies courses.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of Stage 6 Economics, Years 7–10 Commerce and Years 7–10 Work Education (GTSD 2.1.1);
- organise syllabus content into effective teaching and learning sequences and lesson plans which demonstrate knowledge of curriculum and assessment as well as understanding of teaching strategies applicable to Stage 6 Economics, Years 7–10 Commerce and Years 7–10 Work Education (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1);
- incorporate a range of teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students across the full range of abilities and backgrounds to engage and expand their curriculum learning. (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.5.1, 3.4.1); and
- demonstrate a capacity to design assessment tasks, provide timely feedback to students on their learning and interpret assessment data to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice. (GDTS 5.2.1, 5.4.1).
