This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- interpret, critically analyse and evaluate the aims, objectives, outcomes, content and text requirements of the NSW Education Standards Authority: English K-10 Syllabus and English Stage 6 along with the learning across the curriculum content including cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities, related curriculum documents, support materials and policies with a particular focus on Stages 5 and 6 (GTSD 2.1.1);
- plan, design and evaluate units of work for Secondary English that demonstrate a thorough understanding of scope and sequence design with a focus on core language and content, syllabus requirements, effective pedagogy, appropriate teaching strategies, resources and assessment (2.2.1, 2.3.1, 2.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 3.6.1, 5.1.1);
- demonstrate models of pedagogy and approaches for teaching and assessing English, including ways of differentiating the English curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners in the classroom, including an understanding of English Life Skills outcomes, and fostering understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages within secondary English (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 1.5.1, 1.6.1, 2.4.1);
- implement a broad cross-section of theoretical and practical skills and strategies in teaching and evaluating a diverse range of texts and text forms, including digital texts and the use of ICT, that provide achievable challenges for students of varying abilities and characteristics and to support student engagement (1.2.1, 2.4.1, 2.6.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1); and
- demonstrate a sound understanding of assessment strategies, moderation, feedback and evaluation processes consistent with Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and Higher School Certificate requirements, linking outcomes, learning activities and assessment, to provide data to inform student learning and report as required (5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.3.1, 5.4.1).
