Unit information
Build the skills to support your students’ development of lifelong skills in mathematical thinking with abilities to generalise, find connections, think critically and use rapidly changing technology to advance mathematics teaching and learning.
Studying this unit will introduce you to Senior Secondary Mathematics Education, with content drawn from relevant Secondary Mathematics Syllabuses. Exploring many aspects of effective classroom teaching and assessment strategies, you will be equipped to encourage your students to extend their capacity to engage in mathematical thinking and reasoning skills.
You will explore learning theories in mathematics, and how to incorporate these into learning activity design, assessment task design, for both formative and summative assessment
You will also examine the implementation of assessment tasks to inform the teaching-learning cycle, meet diverse student needs, and focus on analysis and effective communication of assessment results.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning (GTSD 2.3.1, 5.1.1);
- show an understanding of the implication of learning theories in designing effective learning activities (GTSD 1.2.1, 3.6.1);
- include a range of teaching strategies in teaching and demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning (GTSD 3.3.1, 3.4.1);
- show an understanding of and the ability to moderate assessment to ensure consistent and comparable verdicts of student learning, and interpret students assessment data to evaluate student learning and adjust teaching practice (GTSD 5.3.1, 5.4.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities (GTSD 1.5.1); and
- demonstrate an understanding of a range of strategies for providing feedback and reporting to students and parents/carers, and the purpose of keeping accurate and reliable records of student achievement (GTSD 5.2.1, 5.5.1).
