Unit information
Social computing tools from blogs to wikis and beyond allow school students to augment their studies by interacting and collaborating online. These technologies are rapidly evolving.
Studying this unit, you will build skills in this fast-paced area and gain hands-on experience using social computing in your own learning. At UNE, we are industry leaders in providing online education that incorporates highly effective social computing tools.
Building on your background in computing and information technology, you will examine social computing tools including blogs and wikis and their application in education.
Analysing theories underpinning social computing, you will develop an understanding of the rationale for its use in the classroom. You will also explore ways to apply social computing in lesson plans and use it for assessment and evaluation.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent knowledge and understanding of the relationships between significant learning theories and the integration of social computing technologies in an educational setting;
- identify, and effectively communicate plans for the integration of social computing technologies as tools for learning in an educational setting;
- analyse and evaluate the principles underpinning the integration of social computing tools, including programming, assessment and evaluation; and
- independently apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge to construct and present a personal philosophy for uses of social computing tools in an educational setting.
