Unit information
Sport and exercise psychology is a relatively young and diverse field, and an exciting area for research. This unit provides you with comprehensive knowledge of the basic theoretical concepts and their application to the field of sport and exercise psychology.
Studying this unit, you will be equipped with tools to help people optimise their performance and motivation – skills that are also valuable in non-sports settings.
Examining psychological skills training and techniques used to maintain and improve sport performance, you will also have opportunities to hone your understanding of the positive and negative relationships between psychology and physical activity.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the concepts in the field of sport and exercise psychology and identify the general theoretical framework from which many of these derive;
- critically examine approaches to applied sport and exercise psychology;
- apply basic methodology relevant to sport and exercise psychology research;
- discuss and evaluate current issues in the sport and exercise psychology fields, with the ability to communicate this effectively with others; and
- independently critique research literature on relationships between exercise and psychological well-being and unhealthy behaviours.
