Unit information
In our increasingly diverse and multicultural society, it’s more important than ever for educators to incorporate culturally responsive practices in their work.
This unit provides a comprehensive exploration of issues around the education of culturally and linguistically diverse students in Australian schools.
You will examine the impact of cultural assumptions and biases in teaching students for whom English is an additional language or dialect (EAL/D students) and investigate the rationale for current multicultural education, anti-racism, and EAL/D policies and related programs.
Furthermore, you will build on your practical skills and demonstrate strategies for culturally and linguistically inclusive teaching practice.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply coherent knowledge and understanding of current multicultural, anti-racism and EAL/D education policies and programs with a focus on student safety and wellbeing (GTSD 2.4.1, 4.4.1, 7.2.1);
- apply theoretical and conceptual knowledge and understanding of learning theories, strategies for differentiating teaching to modify and use classroom resources, address the specifics of child and adolescent development, and meet the learning needs of students across diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 1.5.1);
- apply specialised academic skills and knowledge to demonstrate sociologically informed understanding of culture, race and identity and strategies for culturally relevant pedagogy to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities (GTSD 3.6.1, 4.1.1);
- demonstrate advanced theoretically informed rationales and strategies for school–community partnerships and working effectively with parents/carers for the education of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (GTSD 3.7.1, 7.3.1, 7.4.1); and
- demonstrate sophisticated understanding of ethical issues related to education in a culturally and linguistically diverse society (GTSD 7.1.1).
