UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

From birth through to adulthood, explore how the brain changes over time and the factors influencing these changes. This unit will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the normal changes that occur in the brain with healthy aging, as well as the effects of genetic and environment factors on disease processes.

You will examine a range of diseases of the aging brain, with a particular focus on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Vascular Dementia. From this foundation, you will also learn about the current clinical diagnostic methods and treatment approaches for diseases of the aging brain.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate a broad understanding of brain development from birth through to adulthood;
  2. demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of how the natural aging process affects brain function;
  3. demonstrate an advanced understanding of how genetic and environmental factors contribute to disease processes and effect brain function from childhood dementia to atypical aging in older adults;
  4. demonstrate an advanced understanding of the diagnostic methods used to detect and analyse dementia in adult patients; and
  5. apply advanced level knowledge and expert judgement in the analysis of research findings in the clinical field of dementia.
