Unit information
The Swinging Sixties is imagined as a decade of youth-driven cultural revolution that saw a flourishing in art, music, fashion, and a number of significant social movements. This unit interrogates this widespread pop-cultural myth, exploring the development of this definitive decade as a global cultural, social and political phenomenon.
With a focus on the United States, Britain, and Australia, the unit explores a wide range of topics. We will explore the beginnings of youth culture in the 1950s; key political developments; decolonisation throughout Africa and Asia; the maturing of the Cold War, the Vietnam War and growth of the anti-war movement; faith-based revolutions; the Sexual Revolution and the women's movement; the civil rights campaigns; and the legacies of this divisive decade. In doing so, you will develop your understanding of a vital period of cultural change, and its effects on society as a whole.
