Unit information
Literature written in the period from 1837-1901 is commonly referred to as from the Victorian Era.
In this unit you will be introduced to the Victorian period and examine a selection of Victorian texts and images in relation to social, religious, political, economic and other contexts.
You will begin the unit by interrogating notions of 'Victorianism', and proceed to examine such areas of debate as religious faith and doubt, gender and nation, empire and race, and post-Darwinian fears about the species divisions and what constitutes the 'human'.
Deepen your knowledge of the Victoria era of literature and further develop your analytical and research skills in this unit.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
