Unit information
This unit introduces you to play as a learning tool for young children from birth to five years. You will examine historical, cultural and contemporary perspectives of play, with a particular focus on observing, planning and implementing play experiences to extend children's learning, including the role of play environments, resources, families, other adults and the child's community.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- examine and discuss historical and cultural perspectives of play (CS 1.6, 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 4.1, 4.2, 4.5, 5.1, 5.2);
- understand and explain the pedagogy of play for extending children’s development (CS 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9);
- examine the roles of families, educators and community in play (CS 2.7, 4.1);
- observe, reflect and plan for play, through a variety of activities such as writing, presenting and reporting (CS 2.1, 2.4, 2.7, 3.1, 3.4, 3.9, 5.1); and
- demonstrate professional standards of communication and literacy in a variety of contexts (CS 3.4).
