In this unit you will consolidate your knowledge of comprehensive care, with an emphasis on cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. Your knowledge and skills of safe medication administration will be expanded to include intravenous medications, IV fluids, blood and blood products.

During 80 hours of professional experience placement (PEP), you will apply your knowledge, skills, and clinical reasoning in a practical setting, engaging in highly valuable reflective practice. You will focus on concepts of comprehensive care, underpinned by key ethical and legal principles for person-centred, evidence-based care.

This unit also explores intraprofessional and interprofessional communication, digital health, health-promotion strategies, and diverse healthcare contexts.

Notes

This unit includes 80 hours of professional experience placement.

Professional experience placements will only proceed for students who meet pre-clinical requirements in the first eight weeks of their enrolment in the course and maintain the currency of these requirements throughout the duration of the course.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. develop and apply skills to assess cardiovascular and respiratory system health conditions in order to plan and implement safe person-centred nursing care across the life span;
  2. implement and evaluate evidence-based clinical reasoning and the application of the NMBA Registered Nurse Standards for Practice during professional experience placement (PEP) to develop and consolidate skills in nursing practice, including recognising and responding to patient deterioration across diverse health contexts;
  3. integrate and apply principles of reflective practice, effective communication, and ethical and legal practice within a team approach to person-centered care;
  4. apply the principles of medication safety to administer Intravenous medication and fluids, demonstrating patient assessment, documentation and reporting requirements utilising digital technologies; and
  5. integrate person-centred, preventative and health promotion strategies to cardiovascular and respiratory conditions.

Assessment Notes:
Attendance at a minimum of eight (8) of the weekly 2-hour workshops and eight (8) of the weekly scheduled laboratories/tutorials over the trimester OR 100% attendance at the intensive school is required to pass the unit. Students will receive a mark of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory against this assessment.
 
*Any breech of 100% attendance will require documented evidence and make-up activities. Must pass this assessment item to pass the unit.
