Unit information
Consider everything that your brain is doing at the moment:
- maintaining basic biological functions
- monitoring the environment
- determining what stimuli is most important to pay attention to
- taking in every detail of the visual field
- contextualising that scene and interpreting it based on our memories
- identifying the shapes of these letters and forming words
- recalling the meaning of these words
- parsing the language into a coherent set of phrases and sentences.
Your brain is doing all of that and more, all at the same time, and much of it before you are even aware it.
In this unit you will learn how we use the electroencephalogram to measure the millisecond by millisecond changes in the brain that makes it possible to do everything we do. You will develop an understanding of the fundamental aspects of EEG data and analysis, and learn how to summarise and interpret examples of EEG analysis.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand the use of EEG and how electrical activity is measured in the brain;
- understand the electrodynamic properties regarding how the brain is functionally organised to engage in observation, cognition, and behaviour;
- understand the structures of key neural networks, their interconnections, and how they interact with each other:
- understand how EEG data is prepared for analysis, how it can be analysed, and how to interpret the results; and
- critically evaluate key theories, measures, and experimental paradigms used in EEG research and its clinical applications.
Assessment information
Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
