Unit information
In this unit you will explore the art of planning and proposing an original research project, according to the methodological and ethical conventions of the discipline of History.
Students will acquire knowledge and skills that are integral not only to a wide range of pursuits within history-related industries, but are useful also to a wide range of professions.
You will have the opportunity to identify a potential project within your own field of interest, considering the type of history you would wish to produce in terms of the many different ways in which historical research is applied in today’s world. You will design and pitch a cogent and feasible research proposal, articulating pertinent and attainable research questions and goals, while locating, evaluating, and employing the historical sources most relevant to the proposed project. The process considers the various approaches, techniques, and planning methods involved in designing a history research project, while reflecting on the ethical standards that govern historical research in the 21st century.
Importantly, this capstone unit fosters a culture of cooperation and support among students, acknowledging that historians work best when they are participants within a community of scholars.
