Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

This advanced unit explores major evidence-based neurobiological, pharmaceutical, and behavioural treatment modalities which are designed to address neurodevelopmental, neurocognitive, psychotic, and trauma-related disorders from a clinical neuroscience perspective. You will examine life-stage, genetic, and environmental factors contributions to these disorders, which act upon the brain to impair function.

During this unit, you will cover topics such as case conceptualisation, contextual analysis, pharmacotherapy and neurophysiological treatment models, as potential pathways to precision medicine. You will use neurological and behavioural information-gathering and diagnostic procedures to focus on the treatment needs that arise from these disorders.

Finally, you will learn how to evaluate existing and emerging neurophysiological/behavioural treatment models, establishing their evidential basis and suitability to assist people who receive treatment in clinical neuroscience settings.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate advanced understanding of the methods for applying data from neurobiological and behavioural assessment processes for the purpose of individualised treatment;
  2. demonstrate advanced understanding of the neurobiological models commonly used to create positive outcomes in children and adults with neurobiological disorders that adversely impact functioning in relation to development, cognition, and/or behavioural responses;
  3. demonstrate an advanced understand of the review and analysis methods relevant to assessing the suitability of evidence-based neurobiological and behavioural treatments to meet individual therapy needs within clinical neuroscience settings:
  4. demonstrate advanced understanding of the decision-making and implementation procedures involved in delivery of multi-modality treatments that involve input from professionals representing different disciplines within neuroscience settings and;
  5. demonstrate an advanced understanding of the application frameworks and efficacy of neurobiological and behavioural treatments delivered in clinical neuroscience settings.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
