Unit information
In this unit you will examine the history of the built environment with emphasis on the ideologies, fantasies and various constraints expressed through the design and style of public and domestic buildings.
You will explore how the built environment provides a source of history and gain advanced insights into the ways people have expressed ideals and cultural imperatives through the fundamental activity of building.
Topics covered include an exploration of influential architectural styles, types of houses in Australia, as well as the meanings of national capitals and specialist buildings such as churches, pubs and courthouses. You will also develop your skills in recognising and analysing the main trends in architectural styles in Australia.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge of the development of architectural styles in Australia and the associated history that these changes evidence;
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the skills necessary to analyse buildings as physical evidence;
- apply research methods to interpret buildings as primary sources;
- conduct surveys of buildings, analyse a diversity of building types, and present a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas explaining the interrelationship between buildings and lifestyles;
- analyse and evaluate the relationship between building design/style and ideology; and
- apply well-developed judgement, knowledge and skills to explain that changes in the meaning of buildings reflect larger societal changes.
