Unit information
This unit aims to further develop your Japanese proficiency to a higher level, while introducing you to Japanese contemporary culture.
You will enhance your reading, listening, writing and speaking skills through learning activities using a variety of literary/audio-visual texts such as manga, anime, literature and film.
The unit also provides you with opportunities to acquire cultural knowledge as well as sociolinguistic and sociocultural competence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply skills demonstrating an upper-intermediate level of proficiency to understand the contents of a variety of authentic written and spoken texts in Japanese popular culture products;
- apply skills demonstrating an upper intermediate level of proficiency to state their opinion logically, accurately and fluently about the contents of the written and spoken texts in Japanese popular culture products;
- demonstrate communicative competence through the ability to transfer complex knowledge and ideas in Japanese across a broad range of contexts; and
- apply cultural knowledge and sociolinguistic and sociocultural competence to demonstrate awareness of principal aspects of contemporary Japanese society.
